Mass

In the metric system developed during the French Revolution, the basic unit of mass was defined as the mass of \latex{ 1 } \latex{ dm^{3} } of pure water at \latex{ 4 } \latex{ °C }. A metal cylinder of the same mass was made (\latex{ Kilogramme } \latex{ des } \latex{ Archives }), which, together with the prototype \latex{ metre } bar, is found in Sèvres, near Paris.
The basic unit of mass is \latex{ 1 } \latex{kilogram} (\latex{ kg }). Units that are often used are the \latex{ milligram }, \latex{ gram }, \latex{ tonne }.
