Negative integers
When comparing temperatures, we use the freezing point of water as a reference. This has been set at \latex{ 0 } \latex{ degrees } Celsius. If it is \latex{ 7 }\latex{ °C } colder than \latex{ 0 }\latex{ °C }, it means it is \latex{ minus } \latex{ 7 } \latex{ degrees } \latex{ Celsius } (\latex{ -7 }\latex{ °C }).
Geographical altitude is compared to sea level, which is set at \latex{ 0 } \latex{ metres }. If a fish swims \latex{ 8 } \latex{ m } below the surface, its position relative to sea level is \latex{ -8 } \latex{ m }.
Negative integers are whole numbers less than zero.
Symbol: \latex{ - }
(minus). Example: \latex{ -5 } (minus \latex{ 5 }).
Positive integers are whole numbers greater than zero.
Symbol: \latex{ + } (plus). Example: \latex{ 5 }
or \latex{ +5 } (plus \latex{ 5 }). The + sign in front of the number is usually left out.
While zero is an integer too, it's neither positive nor negative.

Michael Stifel, a German mathematician
(\latex{ 1487-1567 }), called negative numbers absurd numbers. Instead of the form  \latex{ - 3 } he used \latex{ 0 - 3 }.

True statements about integers:
  • All positive integers are greater than \latex{ 0 }.
  • All negative integers are less than \latex{ 0 }.
  • Any positive integer is greater than any negative integer.
