The Fairytale Castle of Neuschwanstein
Everyone who likes fairy tales, the worlds of kings and queens,
and everyone who likes contemplating the past
will see Bavaria as pure heaven on earth.
This wonderful region has plenty of beautiful fortresses
and richly ornamented, splendid castles to see.
But of all of them, probably the most breathtaking one
is the fairy tale castle of Neuischwanstein
situated in the south-eastern part of the state
among mountains and valleys and waterfalls, on top of a cliff.
Its breathtaking quality is highlighted by the fact
that although taking photos is prohibited inside the castle,
it is still the most photographed edifice in Germany.
The building of the castle
was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in honor of Richard Wagner.
Construction lasted from 1869 to 1886.
The castle was not designed by an architect,
but a stage designer named Christian Jank.
This shows the king's intention
and the overwhelming nature of the finished building well.
Before the project was completed, King Ludwig II was found dead
in Lake Sternberg along with the psychiatrist who had declared him insane.
Although originally the castle would have served as a hideaway for the king,
nowadays it is one of the most visited castles of Europe.
It is a destination for 1.3 million tourists a year and 6000 a day.
There is a steep, narrow road leading up toward the gate of the castle
with its mix of different architectural styles.
The towers of the outer walls can be accessed via spiral staircases.
The castle merged the modern technologies of the time with a medieval appearance.
There is running water on every floor,
there is both hot and cold water in the kitchen,
and the baths have toilets with an automated flushing system.
Electric cables as well as telephone lines
were also installed for the king to be informed at all times.
